A prostate resection, sometimes called a TURP operation, involves the removal of part of your prostate gland to treat conditions affecting your prostate or bladder. If you have experienced complications with your bladder, such as an infection or difficulties urinating, or prostate enlargement, you may be referred for a transurethral resection of the prostate to help control your symptoms.
Prompt solutions so you can carry on worry-free
We understand that urology conditions can be distressing and that you will want to receive fast, effective treatment. A transurethral resection of the prostate is minimally invasive, so that you can get back to doing normal activities without concern.
If you are experiencing troublesome symptoms with your bladder, you should book a consultation with one of our specialists to identify the condition and discuss your options for prompt treatment.

What does a prostate resection involve?
The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthetic. Your Consultant will put a thin metal wire with a loop at the end into your urethra and up against your prostate. An electrical current is then used to heat the loop, which cuts away a section of the prostate.
How long is the recovery period?
Following the procedure, you will be transferred back to your room to rest. Most patients can leave hospital one to two days after and resume most normal activities within a couple of weeks.
However, it can take up to six weeks before you are fit enough to return to work, particularly if your job is physically strenuous. Your Consultant will advise you further on your recovery during follow up consultations.
