Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and swollen, most commonly visible on the legs. These are usually visible just underneath the skin, often looking blue or purple in colour and can sometimes appear lumpy, bulging or twisted.

Although not uncommon, some people find varicose veins affect their confidence and prevent them from wearing certain items of clothing.

Varicose vein surgery FAQs

What causes varicose veins?

A healthy vein allows blood to flow forward smoothly towards the heart. The small valves on the inside of the vein walls prevent blood from flowing backwards. When these valves become faulty, or stop working altogether, blood can flow backwards, collecting in the vein and causing it to expand. It is these expanded veins that create varicose veins.

What are the main symptoms?

The main symptoms for varicose veins are usually just visual, with a lumpy, twisted or bulging look under the skin.

However, the skin over the vein can also be dry and itchy, and some people may experience an aching, heavy feeling or a burning or throbbing sensation in the leg. This can cause muscle cramps and swollen feet or ankles.

What does a varicose vein procedure involve?

We offer radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins. This is a minimally invasive procedure usually carried out under local anaesthetic. A very small tube, called a catheter, is inserted into the vein using ultrasound guidance so that the vein can be closed using heat by an electrical current (radiofrequency ablation) to the vein wall. This causes the vein to shrink and close.

Where will my procedure take place?

Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

What if treatment isn’t required after a consultation?

If you and your Consultant decide treatment is not suitable for you, you will only need to pay the consultation fee and any scans or tests you have had until that point.

How long do I need to stay in hospital for?

Almost all patients are able to go home the same day of treatment but your Consultant will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.
