FAQs

Where will my procedure take place?

Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including scans and tests, and follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

What does a facet joint injection involve?

Your Consultant will carry the procedure out as a day case under local anaesthetic. They will apply an antiseptic solution to clean your back, before applying local anaesthetic to numb the area.

Using live X-ray guidance, your Consultant will perform the injection into the identified lumbar joint(s). Several injections may be administered in one session. The injection contains a mixture of local anaesthetic and steroid to numb the nerves for short-term pain relief and provide medium to long-term anti-inflammatory treatment to the joint.

Are there any side effects?

There are very few side effects associated with single or occasional use of steroid injections. You might sometimes experience hot flushes, nausea, or mild abdominal pain, but these should settle in a few days.

When will the pain relief begin?

You may feel as though your back is a little bruised after the procedure and there can be an initial increase in the level of pain, which is quite normal before you start experiencing the pain relief. It should quickly resolve, and you can continue to take pain killers as usual. Your Consultant will discuss the outcome of the procedure with you and advise you on how to increase your activity levels slowly following this procedure.
