Breast implant replacement FAQs
What does breast implant replacement surgery involve?
Much like a breast augmentation procedure, breast implants are normally inserted through a scar placed on the underside of the breast, known as an IMF incision (infra-mammary fold), although in some circumstances, other incisions may be more suitable. Your Consultant will discuss this with you ahead of the procedure.
The implant replacement procedure will be performed under general anaesthetic and take approximately 90 minutes. You will also receive local anaesthetic injections to help reduce pain post-procedure. When you wake from the anaesthetic, you will normally find that you have some dressings on the wounds, and you are wearing a supportive bra. You may or may not require drains which will be removed before you go home.
Where will my surgery take place?
Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including scans and tests, and follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.
How long will I stay in hospital?
Breast augmentation or implant replacement patients will usually stay in hospital overnight, although your Consultant will be able to discuss your options with you before you come in for surgery.
What is the recovery period for implant removal and replacement?
Recovery time will vary from patient to patient, but by four to six weeks after the procedure you should have healed enough to see the results of your surgery and will likely be able to resume activities like going to the gym.
You should expect some pain and discomfort following surgery, but you will be prescribed pain medication for this. You will find that your breasts will be sensitive and swollen for several weeks, although this will settle as the healing continues and your Consultant will be able to discuss this at your consultation.
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implants do not last a lifetime and the lifespan of your implants will generally depend on the type of implants you have. Change in breast shape can result from capsule formation around the implant, or due to drooping of the breast tissue over the implant. Both can be addressed at the time of implant exchange.
Some people find that their breast implants may need replacing after around ten years.
Additionally, you may wish to undergo a breast implant replacement if you have found your breasts have changed around the implants, or if you to wish to change the shape and size of your existing implants.
