Myocardial perfusion imaging allows your Radiographer to take pictures of parts of your heart and detect your blood flow to monitor the possible effects of physical stress.

What is a myocardial perfusion scan and what does it involve?
Before your scan takes place, you will have a small amount of radioactive substance (often called a tracer) injected into your blood, which enables us to detect your blood flow and take pictures of the heart.
A myocardial perfusion scan is usually requested by a Cardiologist, and carried out by a radiographer. The scan involves two parts which produces a report that your Cardiologist can review to see your blood flow under both stress and rest. The stress test will involve exercising on a bike or treadmill, or medication to speed up your heart rate if this is not possible, to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure and take pictures of the heart during this time.
Afterwards, you will have a break in which you should eat and drink before the next part of the scan. The same process will follow as before, with the injection and camera, but this will measure your resting heart rate and activity whilst you are laying down.
Is a myocardial perfusion scan safe?
The radiation used for this scan is considered safe and given in small amounts. If you have been referred for a myocardial perfusion scan, it is because your Consultant feels the benefits of the scan will outweigh any possible effects of radiation. Your Radiographer will be able to explain more about the radiation we use and discuss whether there are any precautions you might need to take
