A laparoscopy, also known as keyhole surgery, is a procedure commonly used to determine a wide range of conditions inside the abdomen or pelvis and can also be used to carry out procedures such as removing a damaged organ or obtaining a tissue sample for further testing. A laparoscopy is also a common procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions in gynaecology, such as endometriosis and ovarian cysts.

FAQs

What does a laparoscopy involve?

A laparoscopy is carried out under general anaesthetic, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Your Consultant will make one or more small incisions in the abdomen and then insert the laparoscope (camera) to examine the abdomen, without having to make any large cuts.

Following the procedure, you will be taken back to your room. You can often go home on the same day you have laparoscopy, although you may need to stay with us overnight.

What if my results show a problem?

Your Consultant may take biopsies for further testing during the laparoscopy, in which case they will contact you to discuss the results. If you require any further treatment, we will be here to help you arrange any additional consultations and ensure you are fully aware of what will happen next.
