Breast lump biopsy FAQs
Where can I have a breast lump biopsy?
We usually offer this test as part of a Breast Clinic or Breast Care services appointment at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone or Sevenoaks Medical Centre. As a private patient, you can choose where to have this appointment, for example if an earlier appointment is available or you find it more convenient to have it at one or other of our locations, depending on where you live and work.
What to expect from a breast lump biopsy procedure
During a breast lump biopsy you will be awake but the area of your breast where the biopsy is taken will be made numb by local anaesthetic administered to the area. The use of ultrasound may be needed to help identify the location of the lump within your breast.
Breast lump biopsies are usually carried out if your Consultant feels it is necessary following your initial breast examination and imaging.
Will it hurt?
A breast lump biopsy is performed under local anaesthetic and the area should be numb. However, you may feel a slight sting when the anaesthetic is administered.
When will I know the results of the biopsy?
You will be asked to come back and see your Consultant 1-2 weeks post-biopsy to be given the results.
What if I need further treatment?
If your biopsy results show that you need further treatment or surgery, your Consultant will recommend a treatment plan for you. Any surgery you need will take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone.
