Dupuytren’s Contracture
Individuals suffering from thick rigid skin near their fingers, causing discomfort and restricting mobility. What is Dupuytren’s Contracture?
Dupuytren’s contracture is an ongoing hand condition affecting the tissue that connects your fingers to your palm. Over time, this condition can lead to thick, cord-like structures that cause the fingers to bend towards the palm, making it difficult to straighten them. This condition can affect any fingers but it’s mainly seen in the ring and little fingers.
What treatment options are available for Dupuytren’s Contracture?
Non-Surgical Treatments
- Physical Therapy: Hand exercises and splints can help maintain flexibility but unfortunately does not appear to halt disease progression.
Surgical Treatments
- Needle Aponeurotomy/Fasciotomy: A needle is used to break the cords of tissue, allowing the fingers to straighten.
- Fasciectomy: Removing the affected part of the fascia to improve finger movement.
- Dermofasciectomy: The affected skin is removed and covered with a skin graft.
Symptoms of Dupuytren’s Contracture
- Nodules: Small, hard lumps in the palm.
- Cords: Thick cords of tissue from your fingers to your palm, these often start at nodules and develop to cords overtime.
- Contracture: Fingers bend towards the palm and can’t be fully straightened.
