Blepharoplasty
KIMS Hospital works with cosmetic specialists, who can perform eyelid surgery to help improve your vision or appearanceAs we get older, our skin loses elasticity and can become looser in places or have a sagging appearance. Not only can this be a visible sign of ageing, but loose skin around our eyes can obstruct our vision, causing sight problems, puffiness and wrinkles. KIMS Hospital works with a dedicated team of Consultants, who can carry out blepharoplasty to help correct the problem area around your eyes.
Expert treatment to improve the look of your eyelids
A blepharoplasty is a procedure that involves removing excess skin around the muscles within your eyelids, making them appear more open and can improve your sight.
When you book a consultation, you can choose to have this at KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre. You will be seen by the Consultant who will perform your eyelid surgery at KIMS Hospital. Your Consultant will provide you with guidance on the results you can expect, the recovery time and the additional information you need to help make the right decision for you. They will also follow you all the way through your recovery. This relationship is important to help you get the best possible results.

FAQs
What does the blepharoplasty procedure involve?
During an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, a local anaesthetic is usually injected into the eyelid to numb any pain. Your Consultant will make a cut along the natural crease above the eyelid to remove or redistribute any excess tissue around the muscle.
For a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, this is carried out under general anaesthetic. Your Consultant will make a cut below your eyelashes and remove or redistribute any excess tissue around the muscle.
Each operation usually takes between one to two hours.
Where will my procedure take place?
Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including scans and tests, and follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.
Will I need to stay in hospital?
For upper eyelid surgery, you may be able to go home on the same day. For lower eyelid patients, it is likely that an overnight stay will be needed. You may need to use icepacks on your eyes for the first couple of days to help reduce any swelling, and you can also use eye drops to relieve any discomfort.
How do I support a good recovery?
You should not drive or operate machinery for at least 24 hours after the operation. Other things to avoid during the first few weeks include:
- Strenuous exercise
- Bending over
- Bright sunshine
- Alcohol
You will benefit from sleeping with your head raised on a pillow. Improvements are usually clear after a few weeks when any swelling has gone down, and the skin has settled.
