Reducing deaths from heart disease, by working with local GPs

On 6th July, KIMS Hospital, the largest independent hospital in Kent, held an event aimed at helping reduce the number of deaths from heart disease in Kent.
Today, every 3 minutes, someone in the UK is struck by a heart attack, with around 30% of heart attacks being fatal.* That’s why KIMS Hospital, Maidstone, is working with local GPs and the community to tackle heart disease across Kent.
The hospital’s award winning dedicated cardiac team ran an interactive cardiology training session for GPs, involving the latest technology and techniques used to diagnose and treat heart disease. This event followed the highly successful ones held earlier in the year.
34 GPs had the chance to experience first-hand some of the latest equipment and techniques that are proven to help tackle heart disease.
Expert Cardiology Consultants were on hand to train GPs in how to interpret results from the latest cardiac diagnostic equipment. Consultants also demonstrated, on dummy patients, some of the latest cardiac interventions; both go hand in hand to reduce deaths from heart disease.
Doctor Siu Ling Wong from Cobtree Medical Practice who attended the training stated, “keeping up to date with the latest technology so that we can identify early and treat heart disease in our patients is vital; it saves lives.”
Commenting on the event, Interventional Suite Manager at KIMS Hospital, a trained cardiology nurse, Anne Hatswell; “working with local GPs to reduce deaths from heart disease is an important role for us at KIMS. We are the only independent hospital in Kent with a specialist cardiac catheter laboratory where we treat both NHS and private patients. With 98% patient satisfaction, we are delighted to open our doors to local GPs. By working together, we will reduce deaths from heart disease”.
