Professional Profile

James Gossage is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

His specialist surgical training was based in leading London teaching hospitals and the South-East of England. He was awarded a laparoscopic surgical fellowship and a HCA Foundation grant to study surgical techniques in the Professorial Unit in Adelaide, Australia. He also received a Royal College of Surgeons grant to study trauma surgery in South Africa. Recently, he has visited to Japan to learn robotic gastric cancer surgery.

At St Thomas’ Hospital he performs a high volume of complex procedures for cancer of the oesophagus and stomach. He also treats benign conditions of the oesophagus and carries out surgery for more common conditions including gallstones and hernias. He is part of national and international specialist groups to improve the quality and outcomes from surgery.

He has been leading the Upper Gastrointestinal Service at St Thomas’ Hospital for the last 5 years. He is Chair of the Regional Cancer network and is National Lead for Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery on the AUGIS (Association for Upper GI Surgeons) Council.

He has a strong academic background and was awarded a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons for his research towards his higher degree. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Kings College, London and an affiliated researcher with the Upper Gastrointestinal Research Unit at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles on his specialist area, two book chapters and a textbook on surgery.
