Knee problems usually present with pain in the joint itself, commonly in the front or inside of the knee. Often, patients will experience associated symptoms along with the pain, such as swelling, clicking, stiffness, ‘giving way’ or a feeling of instability. Knee pain can be caused by many things, from soft tissue damage to degenerative changes. If you experience a knee injury you should seek a medical opinion as soon as possible, and a physical therapist will be able to advise if imaging or a referral to a specialist is required.

Supporting you through a variety of physical therapy treatments

Our physical therapy team commonly treat knee pain and are experts in the following treatments:

Soft tissue massage

This involves direct manipulation of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue to alleviate pain and help with the healing of soft tissue injury.

Exercise therapy and tailored exercise programmes

Your therapist will put together a plan of physical activity and exercises designed for specific conditions that are tailored to your needs to keep you fit and healthy.

Acupuncture

Derived from Eastern medicine, acupuncture involves stimulating specific sensory nerves in the muscles in order to provide relief from chronic, joint, muscle and post-operation pain.

Gym-based rehabilitation classes

Our therapists can provide you with one-to-one sessions and group classes designed to get you moving without causing any further problems, giving you the confidence to get back to doing what they love.

Sports taping

This involves applying sports tape to the skin to stabilise the position of muscles and bones during activity, helping to reduce pain when exercising and aid the recovery of injuries.

Shockwave therapy

This involves the use of soundwaves targeted into the injured tissue to stimulate repair and help to relieve pain. Shockwave therapy is a commonly used treatment for many soft tissue injuries.

Alongside this, our therapy team are passionate about empowering patients to support their recovery through education and advice. We’ll explain every step of your treatment journey to you, including post-hospital care, and will advise you on the best course of action to keep you pain free and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Knee Pain FAQs

What should I do if I have knee pain?

Anyone suffering with knee pain can book a consultation with one of our therapists to discuss your current issues, lifestyle and medical history.

What happens if I need a scan?

If a clinical need is identified for an MRI scan during your initial assessment, your physical therapist will be able to help you with this. An MRI scan, and subsequent follow-up appointment with your physical therapist to discuss the results, can be arranged through the imaging team and physical therapy team.

An MRI scan is usually taken of one part of the body but occasionally, to help with diagnosis if there is referred pain an MRI scan might be taken of two or more parts of the body.

1 part MRI = £420
2 part MRI = £700

A free follow-up appointment with your physical therapists will also be arranged, lasting approximately 15 minutes. During this appointment the results of your scan will be discussed, as well as your options for onward treatment.

What happens if I need an onward referral to a relevant Consultant?

If, during your initial assessment or following an MRI scan, your physical therapist recommends an onward referral to a relevant Consultant, your physical therapist will be able to help you with this and will discuss your options.

What happens if I need further physical therapy treatment?

If your Physical Therapist determines that your knee pain can be treated through physical therapy, they will be able to support you in booking ongoing treatment with either a physiotherapist or osteopath working within the Physical Therapy department.

Follow-up appointments with the Physical Therapy team cost £47.
