Skin lesions are not uncommon and, whilst usually not malignant (cancerous), they can sometimes cause pain or make you feel conscious of their appearance. A skin excision is a straightforward procedure to remove these lesions and give you peace of mind.

FAQs

Where will my treatment take place?

You can choose to have a skin excision treatment at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre, regardless of where you had your initial consultation. Most other outpatient appointments, including follow up appointments with your Consultant, can also take place at both of our facilities.

What does a skin excision involve?

The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic, which will sting briefly, and takes between 15 to 45 minutes depending on the size and site of the excision.

Your Consultant will cut around the skin lesion and then remove it, closing the cut with stitches, which are often dissolvable. Depending on the site non-dissolvable stitches may be used. After five to fourteen days you may need a follow up appointment to remove any remaining stitches.

What is the recovery period?

You will be able to go home a short while after the operation. You should be able to return to work the next day and carry out your usual activities. However, depending on the size and site of your operation you may not be able to drive or perform physical work for one to two weeks. Your Consultant will discuss this with you.
