What to expect from an angiogram heart procedure
What will the procedure involve?
Your procedure will be carried out by a Consultant Cardiologist, supported by a dedicated team of experienced Cardiac Radiographers, Nurses and Physiologists.
The procedure itself is carried out under local anaesthetic, given in either the wrist or groin. A catheter (a thin tube) will be inserted into the artery to inject a special dye and a number of X-rays are taken. The dye helps to identify any blockages or narrowing in the artery.
What if the angiogram identifies a problem?
If your angiogram identifies a problem, your Cardiologist may be able to treat it at the same time. This is known as an angioplasty, which commonly involves stent insertion to treat blocked arteries. Your Consultant will be able to discuss this with you during your initial consultation and answer any questions you may have.
Where will my procedure take place?
Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including scans and tests, and follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.
How long will I need to stay in hospital?
A coronary angiogram is a day case procedure and you will generally be able to go home the same day. Your Consultant will discuss this with you in more detail during your initial consultation.
You should arrange for someone to collect you from the hospital after your procedure.
Recovery and after care
An angiogram procedure is considered to be a safe and painless procedure but, as with any invasive operation, there may be a few after-effects. For a few days afterwards, you may have experience bruising or soreness around the area where the sheath was inserted.
Our team will make sure you are given all the relevant information before you are discharged after your procedure, including who you can contact at the hospital if you have any concerns once you are home.
The cardiac team will contact you in the first week after your discharge to discuss your recovery.
