Breast lump removal FAQs
Where will my surgery take place?
Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including scans and tests, and follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.
What should I expect from a breast lump removal?
The breast lump surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep during the procedure. Once under general anaesthetic, your Consultant will make an incision into your breast, removing the lump and in some cases the breast tissue surrounding it. The wound will be closed with internal stitches.
Will it hurt?
As with any procedure you may feel some discomfort afterwards. You will be given pain relief to help with this and can continue taking pain relief once you leave hospital as advised.
How long will I need to stay in hospital?
Most breast lump removal operations are performed as a day case, in which case you will be able to go home the same day. There are some instances where you may need to stay in overnight, but your Consultant will discuss this with you prior to your operation.
When will I know if the procedure was successful?
Your breast tissue will be sent off to be examined by a Pathologist. You will be given a follow-up appointment with your Consultant, usually one week later, to discuss the results.
If you require any additional treatments after your procedure, your Consultant will discuss this with you during your appointment.
