If you have been experiencing issues with your bowel, such as bleeding from your anus, your Consultant may recommend a flexible sigmoidoscopy to examine the part of your bowel that joins to the rectum and identify the cause. A quick and painless examination, it can also be used to identify evidence of cancer or inflammation of the rectum and lower colon, as well as to remove any small growths (polyps) that might be identified during the procedure.

A fast and painless colon examination to give you peace of mind for healthy bowels

We understand that procedures of this nature can sometimes feel daunting, which is why we work with a specialist team, who are here to support you and make the process as quick and comfortable as possible.

If you have any concerns around symptoms relating to your bowel, you should book a consultation. You will be able to discuss your symptoms and medical history with a Consultant, who will advise you on the next steps to receiving treatment.

FAQs

What does a sigmoidoscopy involve?

You will be asked to lie on your left side with your knees drawn up toward your chest. A long, flexible tube with a bright light and tiny camera will then be inserted through your anus to allow your Consultant to see your rectum and sigmoid colon. If, during the examination, your Consultation identifies anything that may need further examination, small samples and photographs will be taken.

When will I know the results?

Your Consultant will be able to advise you on the results following your examination, although any photographs and biopsies with be taken for further testing. Your Consultant will contact you to arrange an appointment to discuss these results.
