Mammogram
A mammogram is an X-ray machine designed specifically to take 2D images of the breastPlease be aware that this is not a routine screening service. If you would like to have a private mammogram at KIMS Hospital then you will need a referral from your GP.
During a mammogram, the breast is positioned between two flat plates on the machine, which lightly press together. There may be some discomfort but our Mammographers do their best to minimise this. Two X-rays will be taken of the breast and the images sent to a computer where the pictures are reviewed, and a report developed.
How to access a mammogram
Mammograms are offered through our breast care services
We work with specialist breast care teams at KIMS Hospital and Sevenoaks Medical Centre, who will guide you through your mammogram, explain everything you should expect and support you throughout the breast scan.
If you are age 40 years and over and do not currently have any symptoms and have not had a mammogram within the last 12 months, then you can book to have a mammogram with a referral from your GP. Alternatively, you can see a Private GP at KIMS Hospital who can refer you for this service.

Mammogram FAQs
Why do I need a mammogram?
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK, with around 12,000 women dying of the disease every year. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age; lifestyle can also add to the risk, such as being overweight, drinking alcohol and smoking.
A mammogram can help with early detection of the disease and can increase the likelihood of survival as treatment can be given as soon as possible.
If you have a symptom, such as a breast lump, rash or change in the appearance of your breast, you will need to see a specialist Consultant where you will be offered a mammogram as part of our Consultant-led Breast Clinics.
If you have no symptoms, and you are age 40 years and over and have not had a mammogram within the last 12 months, then you can book to have a mammogram with a referral from your GP.
Where can I see a Consultant and have a mammogram?
As a private patient, you can choose to have your appointment at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone or Sevenoaks Medical Centre. We offer mammograms at both of our locations and we may be able to offer you an appointment sooner at one of these. Alternatively, you might find it more convenient to choose one, depending on where you live and work.
What if I need further tests or treatment?
If your results show that you need any further tests through our Breast Care services, treatment or surgery, your Consultant will recommend these to you. If you need a procedure, this will take place at KIMS Hospital.
