FAQs
What is a cystoscopy and what does it involve?
A cystoscopy is a procedure that uses a small, thin camera (cystoscope) to look inside your bladder, allowing your Consultant to see inside and treat some issues simultaneously. The cystoscope is gently inserted into the urethra and then passed into your bladder.
If your Consultant identifies issues that can be treated, they may also use small surgical instruments to inject medication, insert tubes (stents) to treat blockages or remove bladder stones. They may also take small tissue samples to be analysed further.
Is a cystoscopy painful?
A cystoscopy will usually be performed using local anaesthetic to numb the area being examined, although there are several options for anaesthetics. Your Consultant will discuss this with you prior to the procedure, so that you know what to expect before you come in.
Will I need to stay in hospital?
A cystoscopy is carried out in outpatients, which means that you will be able to go home shortly after the procedure. Your Consultant will discuss this with you before your procedure.
